Kudos to Arteta for getting Arsenal’s tactics right against Porto

Arteta got it right tactically against FC Porto

The match against Porto was massive for both Mikel Arteta and the whole of Arsenal football club, tides have changed and things are beginning to look brighter on the north side of London. We’ve reached the quarter finals of The Champions League for the first time in a very long time and we have begun to show that were not to be messed around with.

Some may say the game against Porto wasn’t as dominant as they expected but, if you know Porto and how they set up to play, you’d understand that the game was always going to be physical and revolve around tactics. Although we are used to seeing dominant win and thrashings in recent weeks, I personally never thought it was going to be like that against Porto. They have a good side, a manager who drills them well and plenty of experience. It might have seemed like we were lucky at some points but I think it was just really well managed.

Arteta made a few mistakes last time out and picked a side that in the Premier League were doing well and flying, but he didn’t take into consideration how physical and tactical Porto would play, but last night was different. Areta set up his squad well and played into our strengths over Porto’s and showed them just how smart he could be.

We have a lot of chances in the first and second half and we probably should have finished them and ended the game early, but Porto also had their chances and luckily enough, David Raya stepped up. I think you also have to give a lot of credit to Arteta for picking Raya this season and sticking strongly with him. Although I do think it was harsh on Ramsdale, it was clearly the right choice and when we sit back and look at the bigger picture, we probably wouldn’t have been able to go this far without him.

We face a tough lot of teams in the Quarter finals and we wont know who we face until tomorrow night but whoever it is, isn’t going to be easy. I think we’ve shown this season that were good enough to beat anyone we need to, and with the guidance of Arteta and togetherness that he has been able to instil in this team, we can take on any challenge that comes out way.

What’s your thoughts Gooners?

Zinsberger saved Arsenal from being embarrassed by Chelsea Women

What went wrong against Chelsea Women?

The game against Chelsea Women for our Arsenal Women and our fans was a tough one to take, we knew what we needed to do and we let slip our chance to close the gap between us and the Blue’s for this season’s Women’s Super League Title.

For me, a lot went wrong, and it all seemed to happen so quickly. If It wasn’t for Manuela Zinsberger, I think we could have been really embarrassed at Stamford Bridge, but instead she somehow kept the score lower than they could have been with some elite saves. Here’s what I think went wrong.

Firstly, I think Jonas Eidevall got his line up wrong, we clearly had a solid team out there but for me, both Russo and Blackstenius should have started together, we needed that extra firepower up front and bringing on Russo for Blackstenius so early in the second half made no sense to me. Blackstenius wasn’t to blame for our lack of chances in the first half and as we’ve seen this season, when she gets a chance, she rarely stuffs it up.

Russo was then brought into a game that almost the whole team had lost faith in winning and she doesn’t normally thrive in situations like that. I think Eidevall went with what he knew had been working in other matches, but didn’t take into account that Emma Hayes has built this Chelsea Women’s side to be a very well drilled one and they would have been watching our patterns and figuring us out for a while.

I think we should have surprised Chelsea with different tactics and used our strengths to our advantage, but instead we looked very much the same as we usually do. As soon as the first goal went in, heads went down and losing Catley early in the second half hurt our backline and we then looked bent out of shape because of that.

Chelsea quick fired goals at us and out of nowhere we were 3-0 down with too much to do against a side who were clearly up for it and were feeding energy off the crowd. Our heads went down, and it felt like there was no belief we could get back into the game.

Scoring late, even if it was a deflected goal, made the game look a lot better than it was, but for me, we just didn’t fight hard enough. As I said above, if it wasn’t for some incredible and well-timed saves from Zinsberger, the game could have been really embarrassing but she somehow kept us looking respectable.

I also think the subs Eidevall made weren’t the right ones in the right positions, it seemed like he freaked out and just threw the kitchen sink at it, without considering what to do tactically.

The loss hurts because unless some kind of miracle happens, we look to be out of the race between Chelsea, Manchester City and us. It’s been a good season but again it feels like we should and could have done more.

What’s your thoughts Gooners?

Partey and Tomi given vital minutes in behind-closed-doors friendly defeat

Arsenal lose to QPR 4-0 behind closed doors

11 of our first team players are currently away with their countries for the first international break of 2024 and with our big game against Manchester City at The Etihad coming up, Mikel Arteta and mostly under-21s players had a chance to go to QPR’s training facility and play a match behind closed doors. QPR, who fielded a strong team against the Gunners, ended up walking away 4-0 winners.

After signing a new contract with the club and making his way back from injury Takehiro Tomiyasu got to play 45 minutes of football to hopefully help him get some minutes into his legs and make sure he is able to be in contention when we travel to Manchester, and Thomas Partey was also another first team player who was able to get 60 minutes into his legs after being out with a injury for a long period of time.

According to Arsenal.com, Partey had the first chance of the game but couldn’t find the back of the net. It took half an hour for QPR to find the back of the net from a cross into the box and was helped on by a deflection and the ball crossed the line to make it 1-0.

Partey had another chance to equalise but his shot was clipped over the top for Jimi Gower and over the bar with a left footed volley. We continued to push but went into the dressing room behind at half time 1-0. Tomiyasu had a full 45 minutes but was taken off at half time, with the manager easing him back into play after being out from injury.

The home side started the second half off well and QPR’s Frey managed to make it 2-0 after poking the ball into the roof off the net from the cross.

It was 3-0 with half an hour remaining after another cross cut through the defence and landed at the feet of Dixon-Bonner who put the ball into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 3-0 to QPR.

Partey was then replaced just after an hour and the boss decided he would give his substitute bench some minutes bringing on under-21s players and giving a few young lads a run out. QPR managed to tie up the game 4-0 in the 88th minute when Ziyad Larkeche put the ball past our goalkeeper.

A tough game for our boys but a good run out for them all too and a good challenge for the younger boys to take on. Positive news to hear Partey and Tomiyasu got a run out and will hopefully be in contention for the City game and from here forward.

Arsenal team at QPR: Ejeheri (Rojas 46), Nichols (Dudziak 64), Robinson, Foran, Tomiyasu (Quesada-Thorn 46), Partey (Kabia 64), Lewis-Skelly, Gower (Bandeira 64), Cozier-Duberry (Oulad M’Hand 64), Butler-Oyedeji, Kamara (Rosiak 64)

Arsenal international players on duty last night with Zinchenko and Kiwior featuring

Arsenal’s international duties

11 of our Arsenal lads are away on international duty for their countries for the next week and a bit, and last night we got to see Oleksandr Zinchenko get some much needed minutes for his country as they walked way 2-1 winners in their Qualification playoff against Bosnia & Herzegovina at the Bilino Polje Stadium in Zenica.

Zinchenko started and played 76 minutes before being subbed off. He started the game in the midfield playing as somewhat of a holding right midfielder. He had a decent game, getting 47 touches in his time on the pitch, completely 34/40 (88%) accurate passes, but didn’t have his strongest game.

Zinchenko has been subbed on for Arsenal in recent matches, but you could tell that lack on game time has left him a bit sloppy. Bosnia & Herzegovina were able to shut him down and keep him from making a big influence on the game and he will now travel back to London as The Ukraine don’t have another game in this break.

Jakub Kiwior’s Poland faced off against Estonia in their Playoff Qualification for the Euros and walked away 5-1 winners after a thumping of performance. Kiwior started and played a full 90 minutes and had a hell of a game at left back. Having a massive 124 touches throughout the game, he was involved in a lot of the build up play and walked away one of the best players on the pitch.

Completing 101/108 (94%) of his passes he was dangerous when on the ball, creating spaces for his teammates and getting back when needed. He looked very good in the air and for a very young player was oozing confidence and leadership at the back. A big win for Poland and Kiwior and his country will now focus on beating Wales away from home on the 26th of March.

Tonight, we could see a two of Arsenal players represent their countries starting with Martin Odegaard’s Norway facing off against Czech Republic in an international friendly in Norway. It should be a great game as both teams are ranked very closely to each other and another chance to see our Captain get some minutes for his country.

Mohammed Elneny’s Egypt will tonight face off against New Zealand in a friendly. Elenny should start and get some needed minutes for his country as he has become a vital part of their set up in the midfield. It will be good to see the midfielder get some minutes after being sidelined for some time at club level.

A lot of action to watch and to keep an eye on, fingers crossed everyone has a good game and stay’s fit and healthy.

Arsenal’s international players Roundup – Saturday 23rd March

Today’s International round up

International break is in full swing, and we’ve got plenty of action to keep up with and watch over the next few days for our Arsenal lads. We could see another 5 Arsenal players called into action tonight for their countries and some action to catch up on from last night’s games as well. Here’s a run down of everything that happened and what’s to come later tonight.

Martin Odegaard’s Norway faced off against The Czech Republic in what was an action-packed game for both sides. Norway walking away defeated after a late 85th minute goal from Czech Republic. Odegaard started wearing the armband for his country and played 86 minutes before being subbed off just before full time. He had 81 touches throughout the game and walked away with 55/65 (85%) accurate passes.

Playing in the right of the midfield he had a lot of the ball but wasn’t playing what he would consider his best football. Losing possession 16 times throughout the match and looked a bit lost. He did make some vital tackles and stayed solid in the middle but just couldn’t get his country over the line, losing the game 2-1.

Mohammed Elneny’s Egypt played against New Zealand, but Elneny wasn’t named in the squad or on the bench, but they walked away 1-0 winners.

Tonight, Leandro Trossard’s Belgium will face off against Ireland for their first game of the international break. Trossard is likely to start as his form for both club and country has been great this season.

Then England will face off against Brazil in what should be an action-packed game. Bukayo Saka has pulled out of international duty after pulling up with a muscle injury that has seen him head home to London. Declan Rice is likely to start in the midfield and play most of the game as he has become a vital part of Southgate’s set up, and Aaron Ramsdale is likely to start on the bench for England, but we could possibly see him start between the sticks depending on Southgate.

Then we could see two Arsenal players face off against each other when France take on Germany and Kai Havertz and William Saliba will meet. Havertz is very likely to start after his current form and Nagelsmann saying nothing but praise about the attacker in his pre match presser. Saliba will hopefully get some minutes at the back, but with all the quality in the France side, you just can’t be 100% sure he starts.

Hopefully our lads get some good minutes, play well and walk away fit and healthy.

Kai Havertz continues brilliant form for Germany as striker

0
0

Some of our Arsenal international players have maintained their remarkable form while on international service. For this article, can we discuss Kai Havertz’s amazing statistics in Germany’s 2-0 friendly victory against France?

The 24-year-old’s resurgence must impress Gooners. After a remarkable run of four goals in the past six games for Arsenal across all competitions, Germany manager Julian Nagelsmann had no choice but to hand the former Chelsea man the keys to his attack.

Versus France, Havertz played striker in the 80 minutes he was on the pitch, and as strikers do, he ensured his name was on the scoresheet. He scored Germany’s second goal in a game in which he had 43 touches, completed 22 of 26 passes, created opportunities for his teammates, and made three shots on goal. He also made one clearance and four recoveries, demonstrating that he is a versatile player who can contribute both offensively and defensively.

Looking at such starts, you’d think Havertz had finally rediscovered his mojo. With eight goals already, we should all agree that Arsenal did not waste £65 million by signing the versatile German international.

After 28 league points, Arsenal now leads the Premier League standings with 64 points. Our Gunners are on the same points as Liverpool, but ahead of them due to a higher goal differential, and a point ahead of Manchester City. They have 10 games to perform at their best.

With Havertz’s resurgence and the rest of the Gunners continuing to give their all, Arsenal might win the Premier League by the end of the season…

“We kept on believing” Eidevall on Arsenal’s superb 2nd half come back to beat Villa Women 3-1

0

Aston Villa v Arsenal Women at Villa Park, on Sunday night, was delayed from an 18:45 to a 19:30 start, due to the Arsenal team being delayed in traffic. But when it did kick-off, what a game it was!

I must admit to being a little nervous through the first half. Arsenal Women were dominant in possession, but seemed to be up to their old tricks of failing to find the back of the net. Our Gunners created chance after chance, but couldn’t seem to get through Aston Villa’s low block. Aston Villa defended excellently in the first half and the Villa keeper, Anna Leat, did make some excellent saves.

Unfortunately, Arsenal were punished for not converting any of those chances, when it was Aston Villa that opened the scoring in the 36th minute. The Villans went 1-0 up against our Gunners, with an excellent goal from Ebony Salmon, after a great counter-attack by Villa. The score remained the same at half-time.

In the second-half our Gunners seemed like a different animal. They were on the attack constantly. Pelova levelled the scoring at 1-1 after a great shot from Russo was parried out by Anna Leat. I must say Anna Leat, who was between the sticks because 1st choice keeper, Daphne Van Domselaar, is out injured for the remainder of the season, was on form and made a lot of great saves.

In the 84th minute, Lotte Wubben-Moy headed home a delivery in from Russo to score Arsenal’s 2nd goal of the night. 2 minutes later Stina Blackstenius, who came on as a sub in the 2nd half, slipped inside the box but quickly righted herself to score goal number 3.

What changed so dramatically for our Gunners in the second half? Eidevall had this to say, after the game:

“We said let’s not review what happened in the first half, let’s look into the future and paint a picture of what is going to be for us to be successful. I think we did that well, big credit to the players because they problem solved, they were solution oriented, cool under pressure in the second half. We were so methodical and we kept on believing that if we didn’t convert, we would create more chances. That was a really high performing team in a pressure situation.”

Did you enjoy the game Gooners?

Arsenal vs Aston Villa Women match report – A game of two halves

0
0

Jonas Eidevall and our Arsenal women faced off against Aston Villa women, and walked away 3-1 winners, in a game that we could have probably scored 10, but the Villa keeper and the crossbar kept the scores lower. Arsenal bounced back after last weeks loss to Chelsea, and looked back in great form, having 37 shots throughout the game to Villa’s 1. Here’s a run down of everything that happened.

The game started and Arsenal were on the front foot, creating chances and having most of the possession, but just couldn’t find the back of the net. In the 35th minute the home side managed to get themselves in front when ex Arsenal player Jordan Nobbs passed the ball through to Adrian Leon, who took a touch, looked up and squared the ball into the feet of Ebony Salmon, to take a shot and fire the ball past Zinsberger, into the bottom left corner of the net, to make it 1-0 to Villa.

Halftime came and we had had most of the ball and looked dangerous and, in the 54th minute, our patience paid off, when Cloe Lacasse won the ball back in the midfield, ending up at the feet of Alessia Russo, who took a shot just inside the box, but was saved by the Villa keeper and knocked out into the path of Victoria Pelova, who volleyed the ball first time into the back of the net to level up the scores.

Arsenal kept having chance after chance but the Villa keeper, and the crossbar, were keeping the scores level. It almost looked like the game was destined to be a draw, until the 84th minute when Russo whipped a lovely floating cross into the box for Lotte Wubben-Moy, who headed the ball down and into the back of the net, to make it 2-1 and give us a much deserved lead.

Only 3 minutes later we were at it again when Mead won the ball back, knocking it onto the run of Stina Blackstenius who drove towards the goal, losing her footing for a second but quickly got up and fired the ball on the ground past the Villa keeper to make it 3-1 and seal the win for the Gunners and secure the 3 points.

We probably should have wrapped up the win a lot earlier but for a while there it just didn’t seem like our day, but we managed to pinch a well deserved late victory and bounce back after last week’s disappointing loss.

What’s your thoughts Gooners?

Jonas Eidevall explains how Arsenal changed their tactics in 2nd-half destruction of Aston Villa Women

0
0

Our Arsenal Women defeated Aston Villa 3-1, as expected, to bounce back from the London derby loss to Chelsea. I’m sure some Arsenal fans who watched that game and saw the score being 1-0 at halftime, Villa with the advantage, were already convinced it was another disappointing matchday.

During the break, Jonas Eidevall and his technical bench must have done something remarkable, as the girls were a different animal in the second half. The Gunner women came back and ran amok against Villa, scoring three goals, but the woodwork and the Villa keeper kept it from getting any worse for the Carla Ward-led side.

One wonders what Eidevall said to his players at halftime to make them come back hungry. Fortunately, he gave us the answer after the game: “We changed two things.” Jonas told Arsenal.com. “Villa were really, really compact in their organisation in their 5-3-2. It was really important to attack on one side with a structure and start dragging their 10s out on that side and then, with speed and determination, go over on the other side. That was where we would open them up.

“Once we got that clarity in the second half, we dragged them out and changed the point of attack and started to create some really clear chances. The other thing we spoke about was that Villa really wanted to play out from the back. When you win the ball in those moments against a low block, we needed to be much more forward oriented when you win the ball in these pressing situations and try to create from that.

“We did that really well in the second half as well. At times when you are 1-0 down, you want to try to put over so much information but I think experience told me and the team, in these situations, it’s important to get the details right that we really need to focus on what is going to make a difference.

“We said let’s not review what happened in the first half, let’s look into the future and paint a picture of what is going to be for us to be successful. I think we did that well, big credit to the players because they problem-solved, they were solution oriented, cool under pressure in the second half. We were so methodical and we kept on believing if we didn’t convert, we would create more chances. That was a really high performing team in a pressure situation.”

Some may argue that our Gunner women won the game because of their individual brilliance, but this is not true. If it had been down to individual brilliance or player skill, the first half would have been better. It’s clear that the coaching staff did a superb job at halftime to help Arsenal pull off the comeback win.

Congratulations to Jonas and the ladies for listening to the boss

Seven Arsenal players were in action in the crucial last night of the international break

Today’s international round up

Finally the international break comes to an end after last night’s bunch of games where we got to see 7 of our first team players grace the pitch for their respective countries. A good night of football for all players involved and a good way to end the break with no injures and only positive performances from our Arsenal men. Here’s a run down of everything that happened overnight.

First off we saw Martin Odegaard pull on the armband again for Norway as they faced off against Slovakia. The game finished on equal terms at 1-1 but Odegaard himself had a pretty solid performance. Starting the match and played 80 minutes before being subbed off. He had 80 touches and walked away with 51/61 (84%) pass completions, he created a lot of chances and also was really good defensively, walking away with 5/6 of his ground duels won. Norway definitely would have wanted a win but a draw was a positive way to end the break for them and Odegaard.

The biggest game of the night was in Wales as they took on Jakub Kiwior’s Poland in the Final of the Euro Qualifiers and the Arsenal man was solid as both sides kept clean sheets for the whole 120 minutes of this crucial tie, and it all came down to a brilliant penalty save by Arsenal old-boy Wojciech Szczesny to send the Poles through to the Euro Finals.

Then Kai Havertz’s Germany faced off against The Netherlands and walked away 2-1 winners after an action packed game from both sides. Havertz again started up top for Germany and had a good game but didn’t get as much service as he did against France last week. Havertz played 73 minutes before being subbed off but looked dangerous whenever he had the ball at his feet. Walking away with only 37 touches and 25/26 (96%) pass competition, and was forced to come back and help defend a few times. Germany walk away with 2 wins in the break.

England then faced off against Belgium where we got to 2 of our Arsenal players playing against each other. Declan Rice captained his country and played another 90 minutes in their 2-2 draw when Bellingham scored a late equaliser at Wembley. Rice had a great game again, having 99 touches and completing 90/92 (98%) of his passes. Trossard also started for Belgium and played a hour before being subbed off, having only 35 touches and completed 20/22 (91%) of his passes. Both teams walking away on equal terms after what was a great game at Wembley.

Zinchenko’s Ukraine played Iceland in their hopes to qualify for this year’s Euros and walked away 2-1 winners. Zinchenko was subbed on in the 64th minute and only got 17 touches while on the pitch but completed 11/12 (92%) of his passes. Although he didn’t get a lot of minutes, they were definitely needed after being out of action for a while.

And finally, William Saliba started and played a full 90 minutes at CB for France and had a top class game. France walked away 3-2 winners against Chile and ended their break on a high after losing to Germany in the first match. Saliba played a massive part in their win staying solid at the back, having 102 touches and completing 86/91 (95%) of his passes. He made some big tackles and won almost all his ground duels, keeping the French backline solid and helping his country to a win.

Our players will now travel back to London to focus and prepare for the big match against Manchester City this weekend, hopefully without any kncs or injuries.
